Short history
The date of establishment of the public library is 1922. October 1. On that day, the Mažeikiai branch of the Central State Bookstore, established on the initiative of Aleksandras Vaičkus, opened its doors. A. Vaičkus worked at the library for 8 years, at the same time leading the circle of stage lovers.
The library’s holdings contained only 193 books, 20 titles of periodicals, and 53 readers. In 1923, the number of readers increased to 154. The basis of the bookstore was the great Brockhaus encyclopedia, which has survived in the library to this day.
In 1930–1941, the library was headed by Petras Vainoras. At that time, the collections began to be systematized and cataloged.
In 1941–1943, the library was headed by Antanas Kulikauskas.
During World War II, the library collections were moved from one room to another. Many books disappeared, but the library served readers even in very difficult conditions.
In 1943–1944, the library was headed by Ona Lukštaraupienė.
In the post-war years, the library’s restoration work was headed by Emilija Striaupytė in 1944–1950. Bibliographic work began.
In 1950–1966, the library was headed by Ieva Kripaitienė, a great enthusiast of mass work. At that time, the systematic collection of scientific literature began. The library became a methodological center for district libraries.
In 1966–1967, the head of the library was Vida Marija Antinaitė.
In 1968–1971, the head of the library was Marytė Poznanskaitė.
In 1971–1972, the head of the library was Regina Garnytė.
In 1972–1979, the head of the library was Zita Vida Žilinskienė.
In 1975, the Mažeikiai District Library was moved to a new three-story building, where it is still located today.
In 1976, after switching to a centralized system, the district library became the Central Library with 21 rural and 2 city branches.
In 1980–1981, 1983–2015, the director of the library was Aldona Jonauskienė (Drazdauskaitė).
In 1982–1983, the director of the library was Bronė Lauciuvienė.
In 1991, a re-inventory of the entire centralized library system was carried out, and accounting was revised.
In 1991, the puppet theater “Vyturiai ir pelėdžiukai” was founded.
On 27 September 1995, the library was named the Mažeikiai District Municipality Public Library.
Since 1998, projects have been prepared, thanks to which the funds received are used to organize events, conferences, exhibitions, introduce computerization and Internet access to libraries, purchase other modern technology equipment, and install toy libraries.
Since 2001, the library has participated annually in the National Lithuanian Library Week.
In 2002, the library’s first website www.mazeikiai.rvb.lt was created.
In 2003, the library began to implement the Lithuanian Integral Library Information System (LIBIS).
Since 2005, databases have been ordered.
In 2006, the LIBIS reader service subsystem was implemented, and readers are issued new certificates (magnetic cards) valid in all libraries in the country using this system.
In 2012, The library website has been updated and the website address has been changed to www.mrvb.lt
In March 2014, the reconstruction of the Public Library building begins.
On February 15, 2016, the renovated Public Library opens after the reconstruction.
On August 16, 2016, the library director Alina Bernotienė begins work.
